Pure Fun #10

Untitled

Published by Larry Ransom and Eric Shugats in 1990 and 1991, Pure Fun Skate Zine documented the Lockport, NY skate scene and surrounding areas through photographs, interviews, articles, reviews and more.

Originally nine issues were published but a massive tenth issue is currently being designed for a release in July 2012 for the zine’s 22nd anniversary.

Issue #10 is a “best of” issue containing the best material from the original nine issues as well as featuring photos and images from before and after Pure Fun’s original release dates. I’ve dug up some really cool stuff that no one has seen in a long time and I’m excited to share it with all of you.

Since the release party in Lockport last month, I’ve sold a few copies through the mail to people around the country as well as Europe and Australia. Chris from Florida has received his copy and sent back some feedback I thought I would share…

“So I read through the first 1/4 or so of this… fucking awesome!

This takes me back in SO many ways… the writing is awesome, the tribute to your buddy is something I’m sure he’d be proud of. The pictures, the whole “Skateboarding is not a crime”… the non-skate pictures. Really an awesome look back to a simpler time that was so great! The school we skated was called Lanning… some of your pictures could have been from my town… so rad.

Would love to see some of the color shots… I’m sure you’ll have them at the September 15th deal, but I’m in Florida…

If my cousin was still alive I’d send him a copy too…his zine was rad!

Anyways, thanks Larry… almost like I needed you to do this too! I’m sure all your buds are stoked!

Matt Picker from St Louis has posted a cool review of issue #10 on his blog. Says Matt:

“Pure Fun. My copy of Pure Fun Skate Zine came in the mail late last week and I read it over the weekend. It’s not so much a zine as it is a higher-quality retrospective of a short-lived handmade rag documenting a skate scene in the early 90s in Lockport, NY. A lot of it really hit home, as I had similar adventures at that age, but unfortunately no one in my group had the foresight to photograph or write about it. Only $5. Get it.”

Thanks Matt. Glad you dig it.

As the release party approaches, I figure it was time to reveal the cover of the new issue.

One of Lockport’s best… He had the first cover and now he gets the last. The photo is Angelo Falso ollie’ing over 7 skateboards at Lackey Plaza in Niagara Falls way back in August 1989.

On my quest to dig up some rare and never before seen material to include in the new issue, I happened to come upon this photo of Angelo. The photo originally appeared in the Buffalo News and when I tracked down a print of it, I knew I had to make it the cover. It’s just too cool and it’s a great capture of those times.

Hope you guys like it.

See you all soon.

I think I am going to reveal the cover of the new issue next week. It’s a good one!

05/14/12
While gathering up every photograph, newspaper clipping, flyer and more from my garage for the 22 year anniversary issue of Pure Fun Skate Zine, it was hard to ignore a VHS tape that had “Eric On News” written on it. During the mid/late 1980s skateboard boom, skateboarding was reaching every suburb across the country and Lockport was no exception. Read the full post and watch the video HERE.

05/04/12
Chris Fritton will be making limited edition commemorative Pure Fun posters that will be available at the release party on 7/26. Better show up early if you want one.

04/29/12
I just booked my flight back to Buffalo for the party. I’ll be in town for a week. See you guys soon.
